Indian Seafarers Welfare Fund explained

Here we explain the changes to the Indian Sefarers Welfare Fund and how to access it

As you may have noticed, the Indian government has made some changes to the welfare system available to Indian seafarers.

This is to comply with Regulation 4.5 of the Maritime Labour Convention, which refers to social security protection for seafarers.

To fulfil their duties under the MLC, the Indian government have put in place a range of social welfare benefits available to Indian seafarers.  These will be managed through a fund, called the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund Society, which is a charitable trust managed by the Indian government.

The following new schemes have been introduced:

1)      Survival Benefit Scheme *this has been increased to Rs200,000

2)      Invalidity Benefit Scheme * this has been increased to Rs200,000

3)      Maternity Benefit Scheme (for female seafarers)

These schemes are available to ALL Indian seafarers sailing on Indian or foreign flag vessels.

Details of the scheme can be found in this document and there is an application form at the end for those who wish to apply.
