1. Who we are

The Norwegian Seafarers' Union (NSU) was founded 25th September 1910 and negotiates Collective Bargaining Agreements for deck, engine and catering crew in domestic and international sea transport, for radio officers, ship electricians and stewards and for crew aboard industrial deep-sea fishing vessels. The NSU aims to secure stable and safe wage and working conditions for all groups of seafarers, both domestic and abroad.


2. About this policy

We respect your privacy and value the trust you place in us when you share your personal data with us. This privacy policy sets out the way we, as the data controller, use your data: what we collect, how we collect it, how we use it, why we use it, who we share it with, and the rights to which you may be entitled when you use our website,


3. Data collection and usage

We will collect and use your personal data to allow access to the Site, to register with us or to subscribe to our services, and for the purposes set out in more detail below.

Your personal data may be shared with our regional offices, our affiliates and some third parties.

We may also use and disclose your personal data for any other purposes authorised by applicable law.


4. What personal data we collect and how we use it

Certain types of personal information are more sensitive than others. These "special categories of data" about you includes information about health, union membership, employment, disability, race, ethnicity, criminal offences (or alleged offences), political opinions, biometrics or religion.

We may collect and receive special information about you. We have identified below the types of special information we may collect or receive, how we will use it and why we will use it.

Information about any disability you may have, race, ethnicity, any criminal offences (or alleged criminal offences), political opinion, or religion.

Help defend the interests of our members;


Provide research and information services to our affiliates;


Provide general assistance to Seafarers who need our assistance, information or guidance; and


Represent the interests of Seafarers.

Your personal data may also be processed if it is necessary on reasonable request by a law enforcement or regulatory authority, body or agency or in the defence of legal claims. We will not delete personal data if relevant to an investigation or a dispute. It will continue to be stored until those issues are fully resolved.


5. Why we collect your information

We collect and use your information for a variety of reasons. We need said information in order to provide our services to you. For example, we need your contact details to communicate with you.


6. Data retention and security

We will keep your information for as long as it is reasonably necessary.

We are committed to keeping your personal data safe. We have physical, technical and administrative measures in place to prevent unauthorised access or use of your information.

NSU uses commercially reasonable physical, technical, and administrative safeguards to help protect against the loss, misuse, and unauthorized access to, alteration or destruction of any content or information you may have provided while using the Site. We store information on our secure servers and use industry-standard encryption technologies when transferring and receiving user data exchanged with our Site.

Additionally, NSU uses physical and electronic security measures, including Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), to protect your information. Only NSU has the key needed to decode your information. You can tell if the page you are on is using SSL technology by looking at the lower left-hand corner of your browser window. If you see an unbroken key or a closed lock, SSL is engaged and your information is secure. You also can look at the URL line of your browser. When accessing a secure page, the characters of the site address will change from “http” to “https.”  When you send us e-mail over the Internet, the transmission is not protected from interception.

Please note that we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information that you transmit to or store at NSU. Check with IT.

We will routinely refresh our information to ensure we keep it up-to-date.


7. Information we share

The NSU will not sell or lease your personal data. However, there are certain circumstances where we may transfer your personal data to employees, contractors, our affiliates (e.g. trade unions), or to other parties.

  • We may share information about you with our other affiliate members so we can provide the best service to enforce and improve the rights of Seafarers.
  • We may also share your information with certain contractors or service providers who will be required to meet our standards on processing information and security. They may process your personal data for us, for example, IT specialists, database providers, backup and disaster recovery specialists, email providers, data storage, web hosting services, order fulfillment companies or outsourced call centres. The information we provide them, including your information, will only be provided in connection with the performance of their function.
  • We may also share your information with certain third parties. We will do this when we need them to see your information to provide services and/or support to you.

Your personal data may be transferred to other third-party organisations (e.g. selected partners, affiliates and third parties) in certain scenarios:

  • To allow our suppliers and sub-contractors to provide us with services;
  • If we are reorganised, replaced or amalgamated into another organisation, information may be transferred to such new organisation who can continue to provide services to you;
  • To protect the rights, property or safety of the NSU, our members, affiliates, Seafarers or others;
  • If we're required to by law, or under any regulatory code or practice we follow, or if we are asked by any public or regulatory authority – for example the Police;
  • If we are defending a legal claim your information may be transferred as required in connection with defending such claim.
  • Your personal data may be shared if it is made anonymous and aggregated, as in such circumstances the information will cease to be personal data.


8. Where your information will be held

Your data may be transferred to, stored or processed at a location outside of the European Economic Area by the ITF or third parties acting on our behalf. The NSU will take all steps reasonably necessary to ensure that your data is treated securely and in accordance with this policy.

We will only transfer data to jurisdictions outside the scope of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) where the appropriate safeguards set out in the GDPR are in place.


9. Your rights

You may have certain rights in relation to your personal data including a right to access or to correct the information that we hold on you.

We've listed the rights you may have over your personal data and how you can use them below.

These rights will only apply in certain circumstances. They will generally not be available if there are outstanding contracts between us, if we are required by law to keep the information or if the information is relevant to a legal dispute.

  • You can ask us to confirm if we are processing your information;
  • You can ask for access to your information;
  • You can ask to correct your information if it's wrong;
  • You can ask us to delete your information;
  • You have a right to be forgotten and you can ask that our systems stop using your information;
  • You can ask us to restrict how we use your information;
  • You can ask us to help you move your information to other companies – to help with that, you have a right to ask that we provide your information in an easily readable format to another company;
  • You can ask us to stop using your personal data, but only in certain cases; and
  • You have the right to complain to the relevant supervisory authority.


10. Changes to the policy

This policy will be updated from time to time. We reserve the right to do so at any time by posting the revised version of this Privacy Policy on the Site. Please check this page for changes. If we update or revise this Privacy Policy, we will not use or share your information in a manner that is incompatible with the policy in effect when your personal data was initially collected.
