Some light in the darkness

How the NSU has worked through the crisis

2020 was the year that stopped everyone in their tracks. Nobody could predict how long and how deep this crisis would be.

It has been difficult to deal with all the unexpected issues that came up last year. We have had to be very creative and work with our partners around the world more than ever before. We will continue helping seafarers and campaigning internationally for seafarer’s rights despite the uncertainty of the current situation.

Last year we dealt with hundreds of queries from seafarers around the world. We helped seafarers to reach home, to travel to work, to get paid, to access support and more.

We resolved more than 30 cases with the help of our legal team, including enforcing the regulations in our agreements, sexual harassment, victimisation after making a complaint and dismissal without due process. We also helped seafarers access more than $400,000 that was owed to them through the terms of our agreements, including death in service and disability clauses.

Our negotiations with the cruise companies continue to improve our agreements and to make sure that the MLC standards are upheld.

In addition, we have worked locally to help seafarers during this extremely difficult time as well as joining with other ITF affiliates in our campaign to get seafarers essential worker status.

Our support is free.

We are here for you in 2021 so please send us a message or a question at mail@nsu.org
