Dewa Susila, Bali Director of KPI, the Indonesian Seafarers Union, met with the Governor and the Minister for Labour in Bali on Monday to discuss the vaccination of seafarers as part of the campaign to recognise seafarers as essential workers. They reached an agreement and work will start this week to vaccinate the first 5,000 seafarers.
“Unions at the ITF have been campaigning for key worker status for seafarers since the outbreak of COVID-19. The UN agrees with us and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have called for priority vaccination for seafarers. We are glad to be assisting in the implementation of this important task for a group of workers who are keeping the global economy moving during a worldwide pandemic. It is the respect they deserve. We congratulate KPI their efforts to get seafarers prioritised”, said Lena Dyring, Director of Cruise Operations at the Norwegian Seafarers Union (NSU).
