COVID-19 (corona virus) udpate
How is COVID-19 affecting your job?

COVID-19 update

As you know, COVID-19, also known as the corona virus, is having a drastic affect around the world. This includes the cruise industry and hundreds of thousands of seafarers are having to make changes to their lives.

We have been working with our partner unions in the ITF Cruise Ship Task force to find a way through this crisis. Our priority is to keep seafarers safe, to secure income for those still at sea where possible and to secure jobs in the cruise industry in the future.

Our aim to sign a protocol with each of the cruise lines covered by our agreements and we are nearly there. Each protocol may differ slightly for each company but the basic principles will be the same.

Here is what you need to know:

  1. You should be paid for any work that you do.
  2. Your contract can be extended for a further month with your agreement.
  3. You may be asked to work a reduced schedule. This will usually be 40 hours per week and you should be paid according to those hours. This will not include any overtime.
  4. You can choose not to accept a reduced hours schedule. You can decide have your contract terminated early.
  5. If your contract is terminated early (when you have more than 30 days left on your contract) you should receive early termination severance pay in accordance with the CBA and you will be repatriated as soon as it is possible for you to travel.
  6. If your contract has ended and repatriation is not possible because of corona travel restrictions you might have to remain on board. This means you should have somewhere safe to stay (this could be on board or shore side), food, access to communications and appropriate medical services. You should not be required to work. Everything will be done to get you home safely.
