With an estimated 24.000 infected people in Bali alone, HIV-AIDS is a prevalent problem in Indonesia. It still carries a negative stigma in society, for example it is called the "Disgusting Disease" or "Curse Sore" and the stigma makes the diagnosis extra hard to live with, not only for the person with the disease but also for his or her family members. One of the goals of the pilot project is getting to zero AIDS related deaths and one avenue to reach this goal is emphasis of access to retroviral drugs for anyone who may need it, regardless of monetary situation, stigmas of the society, knowledge of the affected person and geographic location. With approximately 17.000 Balinese seafarers working in International waters, the risk of spreading the disease is very high with high port-to-port mobility, seafarers are extra vulnerable to infection. Adding to this, there are about 2.7 million foreign tourists visiting Bali every year and unfortunately, some of them may be bringing more than their luggage to the beautiful island. The speakers at the event were Dr. Fandi from Padma Bahtera Medika Clinic, Drs I Made Efo Sumiartha from Yasasan Usadha Citra Indonesia, and Dr. N. Mardiani and Poettoet Witjaksono from KPA Pokja Benoa Port. Leading up to this event, our representatives in Bali, Iriani Irene Thamrin and Ayet I Nyoman Arianta visited ships in the Port of Benoa and spoke to Seafarers in the area to distribute information about HIV-AIDS and handing out leaflets and condoms for the protection of the Seafarers' health.
